Chapter 4:

Starting Seeds

A guide to starting plants indoors by seed

To start or not to start; that is the question.

Especially for newer gardeners who have never done it before, seed starting at home can seem an intimidating task. But the longer you garden, the more you are going to want to do it. You can only buy your plants for so long until you start yearning for tomatoes other than ‘Big Boy’. Before you know it, you will covet the unusual flowers and herbs that can’t be found at the local nursery. Most nurseries and garden centers have a limited selection. Most also use chemicals to make their plants look so lush.

Sooner or later, you’re going to want to give seed starting a go. The truth is it’s not hard at all. And though you may not end up with perfect seedlings the first time and every time, the reward is worth the effort. Here are the simple tools that you’ll need.

Pot maker

Flat trays to hold the pots in

Plant growth lights or good southern-exposure window light

Organic potting mixture (sterile soil, vermiculite, and compost)
